Resin Bound or Resin Bonded?

Terrabase Rustic resin bound Broad Walk at Kew Gardens

There are two different systems that use resin to fix gravel aggregates to create decorative surfacing. These are Resin Bound porous paving and Resin Bonded paving and whilst similar in name they have different properties, application methods and aesthetics.

Resin Bound Surfacing – Porous or semi/porous

Resin bound surfacing consists of aggregate mixed with resin in specific blends using specific aggregate to resin ratios. The mixed material is trowelled down to a smooth finish similar to a screed (with no loose stones). Depths are specified depending on aggregate size, normally 12mm, 16mm, 18mm or 24mm.
Suitable for commercial and domestic use on car parks and access roads, cycle paths, driveways, pathways, courtyards, patios, pool surrounds with a life span of up to 25 years depending on use. Seamless, hard wearing, low maintenance, good slip resistance, decorative and porous.

SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems)
Resin Bound is porous, allowing water to permeate/percolate through the surface and beyond when a suitable base build-up configured for SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) has been installed.

Features and Benefits of Resin Bound Surfacing

  • Porous – SuDS compliant when used with porous base build up
  • Seamless contemporary finish – hand screeded to smooth finish
  • Low maintenance – power wash as required
  • Durable – lifespan up to 25 years depending on usage
  • Hard wearing – smooth surface, no loose aggregate
  • Slip resistant – in wet and dry conditions
  • Frost resistant – not affected by freeze thaw action
  • Product Guarantee – 5 year warranty, 10 year warranty and up to 25 year warranty depending on product and usage
  • BBA approved range – certified since 2016
  • EPD certified range – environmental certification
  • Pedestrian and vehicle use – with the appropriate product depth and build up
  • Commercial and domestic use – suitable for all project types

The Addagrip range of porous Resin Bound surfacing systems include BBA approved Addaset, Addabound, Terrabound, our no-dig, minimum dig Terrabase patented system, Stonebound and our flexible rubber and aggregate Addaflex-R.

Our Addacolor resin bound system is classed as semi-porous and is not SuDS compliant.

Resin Bonded Surfacing – Non porous

Resin bonded surfacing is a scatter system which provides texture and the appearance of loose gravel without the issues of migrating stone.
A layer of resin is applied to a suitable surface laid to falls and covered with loose aggregate. Once cured the remaining loose stones are removed to leave a textured natural stone surface. Thickness is governed by aggregate size. i.e. 1-3mm aggregate will have a nominal depth of 4mm. Suitable for commercial and domestic use on car parks and access roads, driveways, pathways, courtyards, patios, with a life span of up to 5-15 years depending on aggregates selected and surface use. Hard wearing, low maintenance, good slip resistance, decorative and a natural looking alternative to loose aggregate without the maintenance issues of migrating stone. Suitable for heritage projects requiring the aesthetics of a gravel surface.

Features and Benefits of Resin Bonded Surfacing

  • Non-Porous – Resin bonded is not porous but is not classed as impermeable
  • Textured surface – gives the appearance of loose gravel but stone is firmly fixed
  • Maintenance – requires sweeping to remove any loose stone
  • Durable – lifespan up to 5-15 years depending on aggregate and use
  • Slip resistant – in wet and dry conditions
  • Frost resistant – not affected by freeze thaw action
  • Pedestrian and vehicle use – with appropriate aggregate type
  • Suitable for commercial and domestic use – not recommended for playgrounds or pool surrounds

Addagrip’s Addastone Plus Resin Bonded surfacing is available in a range of natural aggregates selected for decorative appearance, hard wearing properties and high PSV (Polished Stone Value) to ensure good slip resistance.
