AWARD WINNING PARK ACHIEVES
SURFACE LONGEVITY WITH ADDASTONE

Addagrip’s Addastone resin bonded surface has been praised by BALI judges following its recent use on the award-winning Park Central project in Birmingham.

Park Central is phase 1 of the Birmingham Attwood Green Regeneration Scheme – a joint partnership between Birmingham City Council, Optima Community Housing and Crest Nicholson that has been hailed as one of Europe’s biggest urban regeneration projects.

English Landscapes and Birmingham City Council’s Landscape Practice Group created two impressive four acre parks in the centre of the new development that are linked by a piazza area. The parks had to contain traditional facilities with a contemporary slant to reflect the modern development.

For the surfacing of the Park’s extensive path system, quality and longevity were key requirements. Tarmac would give too harsh a look, so a resin bonded surface was chosen instead to give the paths a softer look and more organic flow.

4000 m² of Addastone with 1-3 mm Golden Pea Gravel aggregate was used in total. Jonathan Webster, Principal Landscape Architect at the Landscape Practice Group said, "Addastone was chosen for its proven longevity. It gave us an easy to maintain surface with the right look that wouldn’t need to be touched up or re-surfaced years down the line."

When the project won the Principal Award in the category of Land Renewal at the BALI 2006 National Landscape Awards, the judges praised the extensive path systems for being 'superbly well finished'.

Mr Webster added, "Surfacing the paths was a challenging job integral to the overall design of the parks and we are extremely pleased with the results. Both Addagrip and contractors Midland Decorative Surfaces worked with us to source the right coloured aggregate and correct base course. The success of jobs like this not only depends on the quality of the surface, but also on the way in which it is laid and Midlands Decorative Surfaces provided an extremely professional service."

Addastone uses natural, locally sourced or recycled aggregates bound with clear or coloured resins for a textured finish and the appearance of loose gravel without the associated problems.
